A plua. of guilty was entered by Leonard Hevins, a member of the First Division of tho Keserve, for failing; to make application to the Government Statistician for onroliuont in that division. It was stated that defendant registered as in tho Second Division, lie was not a married man, but was living with a married woman and was supporting her and her children. Mary Johnston, an old-age pensioner, who was charged with being found drunk, was convicted and ordered to como up for sentence whon called upon, nnd a prohibition order was issued against her, to bo effective for tweive. months. Thomas North and Axel Williamson, charged with drunkenness and agauist e-ich of whom there was one previous conviction, were each fined 205., with t!ie alternative-of seven days' imprisonment. li'or insobriety a, first offender was fined 10s., with" the option of 18 hours' imprisonment. RIFLING A BAR TILL. Daniel Shaw,, a seaman, was charged with breaking and entering tho Cncketers' Arms Hotel, occupied by Timothy Foley, licensee, and' stealing the sum of about ±13 17s. lljd. Inspector Marsadc prosecuted, and accused was not represented by counsel. Timothy Foley, in his evidence, stated that on March 20, the day in question, tho bar of the hotel was closed at 6 p.m., and some timo later there was ft knock n.t. {he front door. Witness went to the door ivnd saw a seafaring man, and told him to-go away. Witness then heard a noise in the bar, and on going there discovered accused behind the counter with the cash register till rpen. On being asked what he was doinc tl-ero the man said he was. counting the money. Witness seized him, and eventually handed him over to the police. The casn. register contained over JCI3. and all the money except two threepenny pieces had disappeared. Mrs". Foley, trife of tho licensee, gave corroborative evidence. Constable Cox, who took the focused in charge, stated that v/hen the man w as searched at the station ,£l3 17s. Uld. was found on him. When questioned ho admitted having robbed the till, and said he did not. care, remarking, "I am in a good country, and I want to stay here." Accused pleaded guilty, and was committed to the Supreme Court for sentence. THEFT BY A~ CLERK. A young man, formerly employed &s a clerk, pleaded guilty to stealing .£4l 13s. 4d., the property of the company he was working for. According to the evidence, on March 8 accused was working overtime-, and usked the, chief clerk for the kpys of the safe to get 60ine books out. The keys were given to him, and the chiefclerk then left. The next morning the latter found :hat an envelope containing ,£4l 13s. 4d., a salary of an. efficer of tho staff, was missing from. tiie cash box, where it had been placed tl.e previous evening. • Accused was committed to the Supreme Court for sentence. Mr. W. l>. Webb, ] who appeared for accused, nsked f< r bail, which was fixed at .£IOO and two sureties of .£SO each. DISOBEYING ORDERS. A greaser named Phil Brady, engaged oil an overseas mssel, refused to obey the lawful comma.id nf an officer on the high seas. It was shown in the fvidence that when the watch changed ft piston rod was noticed to be emnking hot and a danger to the vessel. Brady refused to swab the piston rod with grease, on the ground that the packing round the rod, which had been luosened, increased the risk of scalding. He wai:ted the packing tightened be'"oro he would do the job, which had eventually to bo done by two junior vjnginoers. Till , A. W Blair who appearad for the captain, asked for the full penalty. Brady was sent to kaol for one uonth.
