SEAMEN'S QUARTERS RAIDED

COURT PROCEEDINGS FOLLOW, I

By Telesraph—Preßa Association. Christdiuroh, March 26. As a result of a raid yesterday in tho seamen's quarters of an ovorsea vessel.' John Marshall, Frederick Edward Elkin, and Walter Ml were charged at Lyttelton to-day with stealin" goods valued at £3 165., the property of thb New Zealand Shipping Company. Each pleaded guilty to taking possession of the goods, but denied having broken into the cargo. In tho course of the evidence an officer on the ship stated that he had hoard of very few cases of pillaging on the vessel while on the New Zealand coast. He did not consider the present offence a very serious one, and ho hoped that tho Bench would not imprison the men as there was a shortage of seamen. A fine of £5 and costs was imposed on each of the accused. Tho Bench remarked that the offence was 'a, very serious one. Tho articles had been stolen with the full knowledge that they belonged to somebody else. It was surprising that a shin's officer should treat tho offenco so lightly. It was certainly tho wrong method cf helping the.'authorities in preventing pillaging of cargo.
