TRAMWAY RETURNS

A SUCCESSFUL MONTH. '

: From April 1 to; March 2 was perhaps characterised by ; the finest weather experienced during the summer season. That fact is emphasised in the tramway, returns for the four weeks mentioned, presented to the Tramways Committee of the City Council yesterday afternoon. During "that period the revenue showed an increase on the corresponding period of la'st year of £1305, whilst the' working. expenses jumped £969, leaving a net comparative increase in receipts of £336 i . For the first time in the history of the electric tramways the revenue for the eleven months (the year ends next Saturday) has topped. the £200,000 mark,'the precise return being £39 in oxcess of that figure, as compared with £190,616 for the corresponding, period of last, year—an increase of £9423. That increase, however, does not equal the enormous jump in the working expenses for the period, which are £11,765 in excess of those for the corresponding period of last year, due to the heavy increase in the cost of coal, , material, and wages (war bonuSj_ payment to men on active service, etc.). Whilst the credit- balance for the fne-weather month has been increased from £1947 to £2137, the .credit for the eleven months shows a' decrease from £13,691 at this time last year to £10,964. , '"■■",, The figures for the four weeks ended March 2 (with the stated comparison) are as.follow:-— „„ 1918. 1917./ Revenue £18,268 £16,963 Working expenses £12,136 £11,167 Special expenWo £485 £495 Capital" charges £3,510 £3,354 Credit balance ... £2,137 £1,947 Revenue per car „■„,,, mile 18.86 d. 17.41 d Working expenses per car mile ... 12.52 d. 11.46 d.
