MAGISTRATE'S COURT

POLICE AND BY-LAW CASEvS.

Mr. W. G. Riddell, S.M., presided at the Magistrate's Court .yesterday, and dealt with the police and by-law cases. William Robert Stevens was charged that, on March 16, at Wairoa, he did obtain from Murray, Roberts and Co. £35 Us. by false pretences, namely, by a valueless cheque. He was remanded to appear at Napier on March 27. A remand to March 28 was gracted in the case of Patrick Francis Newtown, charged with the theft of a steel bottle containing 281b. of . mercury, value £0 13s. Bd., the property of the Wellington C4as Co. George William Knott was charged with receiving certain sums of money, amounting to £11 ss. 10d., on terms requiring him to account for same to the City Milk Supply, Ltd., and had failed to do so. He pleaded guilty. Inspector Marsack said the accused was a married man and had given way to drink. There was nothing previously known against him. The Magistrate decided to give him a chance, and convicted and ordered him to oome up for sentence when called upon, ou condition that he refunded the money at the rate of £1 per montli. ■ For insobriety George Harley, against whom there were three previous convictions, was fined 405., in default seven days' imprisonment; Thomas Rimmer, who had the same number of convictions, received a similar penalty; Lilian Jukes, with two previous convictions, was fined 205., with the option of three days' imprisonment; and six first offenders were leniently dealt with. For committing a breach of nis prohibition order, H. Whitburn was fined 405., with the alternative of seven days' imprisonment.

BY-LAW CASES.

\ hawker named John Millanta, whom Mr. J. O'Shea described as a nuisanco to the authorities, was convicted of placing rotten and rejected fruit on tho footpath, and was fined 20s. and costs. Joseph Patrick Lavin had preferred against him two charges of exceeding the speed limit with his motor-car, and a third charge of failing to stop his car when requested by a constable on point duty. The defendant did not appear, and was convicted on all three informations. On the charges of excessive speed he was fined 40s. and costs on each charge, and on the' other 20s. and costs. Dr. Steele, also charged with exceeding the speed limit, was fined 40s. and costs.

For driving or riding round the corners of streets on the wrong side, Arthur Archer, Richard Bradley, Harris Dowman, Arthur Laroche, and Samuel Mason were each fined 10s. and costs, and Charles " Rodgers, Joseph Stott, and William Talbot sa. and costs. For allowing stock to wander, John H. Gressier, R. Wei shy, Ernest William Daniel (two charges), and H. Wellesley were each fined 10s. and costs, and 'John A. Bassett and Timothy Herlihy were each fined ss. and costs. • Frederick John Gooch, for having an unregistered dog in his possession, was fined 10s. and coßts, For standing on the platform of a tram and refusing to move inside when requosted to do bo by the conductor, William White was convicted and fined 6s. and costs 15s. For failing to attend drill, V. L. A. Piper, H. K. Reynolds, F. Pickiiis, and H. A. Campbell were each fined ss. and costs 75.; J. Brett, J. Duncan, E. T. Heywood, and H. Smith were each ordered to pay 7s. costs. H. A. Campbell, further charged with obstructing a parade, was connoted and fined 20s. and costs 75., and H. Smith for a similar offence was finfed 10s. and costs 7s. A reservist, E. Middleton, pleaded cruilty to failing to notify change of address. Mr. H. F. O'Leary, who appeared for defendant, said it was just a case of negligence./ A fine of 405., in default seven days' imprisonment, was imposed. Garnet Holmes., for failing to register his factory, was fined 30s. and costs
