CHAOS IN AUSTRALIAN PAY BRANCHES
OVER-PAYMENTS. OF £40,000
Melbourne; March 22. The final report of the Commission ' of Inquiry into the administration of the Defence Department states that the condition of the pay branches is , chaotic. Nearly £40,000 is involved m over-payments to allottees of. soldiers, partly as . the outcome of fraud, ; and partly as the result of carelessness. "
Referring to the frauds by Lieutenant Howell Price, the report savs it appears that upon the representations of the father, and in view of the - war service- rendered by the accused's brothers," the Government had decided not to proceed further. Tha Commission urges action oil all the charges preferred..' * Referring to tho methods of receiving and disbursing stores, the report says the position bns become bo hopeless in regard to adjusting discrepancies that it recommends that the deficiencies be wiped out, and a clean start made. It urges the appointment of a Director-General of Military Accounts. Tho Government has appointed four prominent business men to administer the Defence Department.—Press Assn.
