THE KUT SURRENDER
GARRISON'S FEARFUL MARCH 3236 DIE IN THE DESERT (Roc. March-20, 11.25 p.m.) , London, March 19. In the House of Commons Mr. J. F. Hope stated that 3236 officers and men of tho Kut>el-Amara garrison had not been, heard of since General Townshend'a surrender. The authorities state that it is practically certain that all of them died during the hundreds of miles of march across tho desert, where no provision was made for food, shelter, or medical 'treatment. AH were very weak owing to thejirivations of the siege, and many who were suffering from dysentery doubtless fell out on the march and died by the wayside. About a fifth of them; were British. AU efforts to get information from the Turkish Government Lad failed.—Aiis.-N.Z. Cable Assn.
