OBITUARY

MR. JOSEPH MANDEL. General surpriso and regret will be expressed at tlio news of the death of Air. Joseph Mandel, for many years a citizen of Wellington, and known throughout New Zealand. Mr. Mandel arrived in Wellington from Christchurch on Saturday morning, and was taken ill a few hours later. Hβ wont into the Davis Street, Private Hospital on Monday morning/ was operated upon for acute appendicitis at 11 a.m. tho Bame day, and from that time gradually sank until ho passed away; at 8 o'clock last evening.

Mr. Mandel arrived in New Zealand as a youth of 18 in 1875, and after, working industriously for some years, saved enough to commence business in Wellington as a tobacconist and hairdresser. For many years he conducted a business in Willis Street (afterwards acquired by Messrs. Frank Wise and. J. B. Speed), and on Lamiton. Quay* He subsequently took a lease of the Club Hotel, MaetertoH, and after spending some years there acquired the freehold of the Empire Hotel, Wollington. Eventually he sold out to a company, and later acquired interests in'the Grand Hotel, Wellington, the United Service Hotel,' Christelrurch, and the Grand Hotel. Diinedin. Hβ was also largely intereeted in the establishment of "niarblo bars" in Auckland, Wellington, and Christchurch, and was a partner in the firm of Man* del and Carr, wholesale jewellers. For some yeare he was a member of tho Wellington Bowling Club, and he »ns president of tho Jewish Synagogue in Wellington for a number of years. . Mr. Mandel leaves a widow (neo Miss Lyons) and a family of two sons and tliree daughters. His eldest son is Dr. Leo Mandel, of the staff of the Koyal Naval HosdHml at Edinburgh, The other son is Master E. Mandel, ati present a student at the Wellington nollo".e. The daughters arc Mrs.' 15. J. Hyams, of Kelburn: Mrs. J. Salmon, of London: and Miss C. Mandel.

Tho funeral will leave' the rpsidejirn of hU son-in-law, Mr. E. J. Hyams. of 21 Upland Eoad, at 2.30 p.m. to-day-
