WHEAT GROWING TESTS

/'EXPERIMENTS. IN AUSTRALIA.. '■■:■ Tho success of both Marquis and Huron wheats in Tasmania seems assured if the results of this the first year' of trial are to he accepted as a guide. v Mr. "\Y\. J, Hingston, of C'rcssy, Tasmania, is an experimentalist in cereals,- and he has recently publish- ■ t'tl tho results for this season. Marquis niid Huron wheats gave yields at the rate bushels 401b. to the acre each. J Prelude was thoearliost to niature,".an'd'.yielded 21 bushels 201b. to the acte." Sparrows damaged tho plots. ::r--'- -■ H. K. M'Cbfl, of Yellarbon, Queensland, informed Sir Joseph Carrutners that Marquis*, was tho only wheat to givo him ;i yield this season., which was a very bad one for wheat. Ho got 10 bushels to the acre, whereas Monition and Marshall's No. 3 completely failed. He is sowing principally Marquis this year, as he is satistied'it will suit his district well iu a favourable season for wheat.

:: Mr. Pi. AVallace, of Jindabyne, has finished..- harvesting about 70 acres of Marquis for a yield of 8 bags to the acre, or about _o bushels. Tho ripe crop had been standing for over four to six weeks, during which time very heavy ram occurred for spells of a week at a time. This reduced the yield somewhat, but is a testimony to the way this wheat stands up and holds its grain, even when dead ripe and exposed to severe weather. Mr. Mark Lyndon, Coolamon, New .South Wales, got eight bags of Martinis to the acre, and fair yields of Huron, after heavy hailstorms. Federation and' Yandilla King were completely knocked out, and a neighbour got only'five bags from 100 acres. Mr. W. H. Hunt, Meranbiirn, Forbes Line, New South Vales, shipped eight bags to the acre from Marquis, moro than equalling Federation grown alongside.
