PETONE TECHNICAL SCHOOL
At the monthly meeting of the Pctone Technical School Managers there were present: Messrs'. J. G. Castle (chairman), A. J. Hobbs, J. W. M'Ewan.'J. Burk, It. H. Jones, and D. M'Kenzie. The Lower Hutt Technical Committee advised that the following resolutions had been passed by it: "(1) That Mr. J. H. Lynskey be granted a bonus of £10 for the year 1917. (2) Thai Mr. Melody he supervisor of the classes and secretary of the committee at a salary of £5 per term. (3) That the following appointments be made: Bookkeeping, Mr. 'S. F. Jtidd; shorthand, Mr. E. J. Young,; dressmaking, Mrs. Armstrong; examination subjects, Mr. Melody; English and arithmetic, Mr. D. Robinson." Classes for French and millinery and an extra dressmaking class Wild be started if sufficient inducement offered. Jn seconding a motion of approval oi the resolution, Mr. M'Eivan said he was pleased to note that the Hutt School still progressed. He was also pleased to learn that the intentions or the Hutt people in technical school matters were in no way antagonistic to Petonc. It must be obvious that to have in this district two fully-equipped schools in close proximity would bo to the detriment of each, but to have an institution dealing with the llioro popular subjects of technical education in each centre of the district would prove a big advantage. Mr. Hancock was appointed 'instructor in the plumbing class and Mr. Carey to Um steam class.
The Director (Mr. J. H. Lynskey) reported that the classes.were now in full swing. An excellent beginning had been made, and the year should be a record one. The wool, class was_ so overcrowded that, with the permission of the chairman, ho had started two additional classes. If tbo number of students in the ladies' wool class did not iiicreaso during the month it would have to be merged into one of the 'other classes. Mr. Gardiner recommended tliat Mi'. Jenkins's prize should be allotted to Mason, 1; Watson, 2; Parrant, 3. A class in accountancy had been started. Five pupils wcro now ready for wool-classing examination, and he recommended that Mr. Greening hold the examination next Saturday at Kaiwarra. One lady attended only one lesson in tho wool class last year, and bo recommended that her fee be refunded. The- report was adopted. .
