MAGISTRATE'S COURT

POLICE AND BY-LAW CASES Mr. S. E. M'Carfchy, S.M., presided over a sitting of tho .Magistrate's Court yesterday, ■ and heard the police cases and by-law cases. Elizabeth Watson, an old offender,' pleaded guilty to tho theft of a pair of lady's shoes, valued at 205., the property of Kate Marsh, and was sentenced to three months' imprisonment. Gtis Edwards and Charles Eklund, waterside workers, had an argument in Clyde Quay, and settled tho matter by fighting. The men, who wore on bail, failed to appear in court, and were each fined 205., in default seven days. Arthur Bosnian, a sailor on a sailing vessel, was on the half deck, a part of the ship where he had no right to be, and was ordered by the first mate to go to his own quarters. He refused to obey, and used very indecent language which could have been beard by those- on the King's Wharf. When the man got on deck he threatened to kill tho first mate when the vessel got to sea. Mr. 6. G. G. Watson, who appeared for tho captain, said the man was not wanted on the vessel. The defendant was sentenced to three months' imprisonment. Evelyn Barr, Lillian Jukes, and George Cooper Wilkinson, who were charged with being drunk, and against whom there were previous convictions, were each fined 205., in default seven days' imprisonment. For insobriety three first offenders were eaoh fined 10s., in default 24 hours' imprisonment, and another who had to receive medical treatment was fined. 205., in default 48 hours' imprisonment, and was ordered to pay lis. Gd. medical expenses, with the alternative of serving seven days in gaol. Jane Smith, a married woman, when about to procure a bottle of beer for herself, was asked by a home sorvico soldier in uniform to procure a bottle of stout for hjiri'ni the samo time. The soldier was an elderly man, and tho woman complied with- the request. She was charged with committing an offence, and pleaded guilty through her counsel, Mr. H. I' 1 . O'Leary, and was convicted and ordered to come r.p for sentence when called upon. - Nina Olive Dye, for whom Mr. H. F. O'Leary appeared, pleaded guilty to the theft of a parcel containing children s clothing and a hair brush. She went to Auckland and stayed with some peoplo there. . A parcel containing the goods mentioned arrived, and the defendant opened tho parcel and gave the clothes, which she did not think were of any value, to atfriend, and kept the hair brush, which was of very little value. She was convicted and ordered to come up for sentence when called upon, and she was ordered to mako restitution. George Wonnocott, for whom Mr. H. EL Anderson appeared, was charged with being on licensed premises when the samo wero required to be closed. The accused was seen coming out of the Metropolitan Hotel at 1 a.m. with two others. The latter gave a satisfactory explanation for being there. Wonn'ocott said lie was the guest of one of the lodgers in the hotel, and this statement was confirmed dn evidence. Mr. Anderson pointed out that the Act, permitted a lodger to entertain a friend and supply him with liquor at any time, even during, prohibited liours. The Magistrate dismissed the information.

BY-LAW GASES. Eric Bates was convicted of riding a motor-cycle across the intersection of Willis and Manners Street at a speed exceeding eight miles an hour, and was fined 20s. and costs. Thomas-Connelly, for having no tail light on his motor-car, was fined 20s. and costs 17s. 6d. | For hawking without a license Ernest Hunter was fined 40s. and costs 17s. 6d. Kate Arthur, of Upper Willis Streot, was charged with selling firearms to a boy under 16 years of age. Two weapons were produced, and it was stated for the defence that one of the rifles was of a kind not stocked; the other had probably been stolen from the shop, as several thefts had taken place from the shop. The books produced showed no entry of a sale on the date in question. After hearing ithe evidence the Magistrate dismissed the information. .• Harry Bramley, ranger to the Makara County Council, for whom Mr. E. M. Sladden appeared,, proceeded against William Conrick, carter, of Porirua, represented by Mr. H. J*. O'Leary, for having,, on December 10 last, interfered with and attempted to rescue a cow which was being taken to the pound; Several witnesses gave evidence, and for the defence it ivas stated that the cow was not .wandering at large, but was being driven to water by three boys, all of whom were riding The cow was watered first, and while the horses were being watered the cow went up a bank, Mid when the horses had finished watering it was found that the cow was being driven by the ranger. The boys went after the cow, but eventually the father of two of tho lads and the owiier of the cow came up, ? ; »d after ho had some conversation v.'ltll the ranker tho bovs were told to drive the cow home. After hearing evidence the Magistrate dismissed the information. No costs were allowed.
