Tho annual report of the New South Wales Inspector-General of the Insane states that the number' of cases last year was below the average, of the last twenty years, and the lowest since 1912, notwithstanding the stress of war conditions, under which an increase in tho number of mental'. cases might have been anticipated.
■ During the' month of January the Comforts Department of the Christchurch branch of the Red Cross paid, in providing comforts for hospitals at Homo and ■ abroad, the sum of £-107. This included the sum of £200 from the organisers of the ' kitchen raffle which was held sometime ago in Christchurch, and which was expended in purchasing Glaxo for Egypt. Among the comforts purchased were cases or fruit,' tomatoes, cake, supplies of smokes, fish, and poultry for the local military hospitals, and in addition large supplies of garments for hospital wear.
