AN -INTERESTING POINT. . In the. Magistrate's Court yesterday, before Mr. S. E. ■ M'Carthv, S.M., Adam John Monro, lieenspe of the New Zealn.mler Hotel, was charged with emTiloyiiic an unregistered barmaid. Mr. P. W. Jackson, who appeared for. the accused; admitted all the facts in the-informatibn; and stated that the point for discussion was whether the word "daughter" in" the Act included "daughter-in-law." The Act empowers the licensee to employ his wife, sister, or daughter in the bar without them being registered. . The unregistered barmaid mentioned, in the information was Helen Monro, f]aiighter-in-law of the licensee. His. son and davghter-in-law were "both emnloyed at the hotel, and. lived there. The son had an interest in the business. The.question was whether the cxemntinn of daughter in Hie Act included the daughter-in-law. The Act no. doubt intended that the whole of the female members of the licensee's family were to- be exempted. Helen Monro was a daughter of the defendant'in that she-was his daughter-in-law. The licensee-regarded her as bis daughter and a'member-of his family. He quoted eases bearing on the point, and asked His Worship to look into the matter. ' ' Judgment was reserved.
