« The house of Mrs. A. T. Hawke, at Clarcville,-which was destroyed by fire on Sunday night, was insured for £300 in the Phoenix office. The furniture and piano, owned by Jlr. Churchcr, was insured for £250 in the Royal Exchange office. The whole of the available beds in the Buchanan Home and the Solway Home are now occupicd. Neiv sanitary and drainage by-laws were framed at a special meeting of the Masterton Borough Council on Monday evening. Maintenance accounts amounting to £2722 15s. 4d. have been written off by the Wairarapa Hospital and Charitable Aid Board as unrecoverable. The' Government has subsidised £ for £ a grant of £50 made by tho Wairarapa Patriotic Association towards furnishing Quarters at tho Featlierston Camp for staff sergeants-major. It is proposed to appoint a masseuse to the staff of the Masterton Hospital. Miss R-oby, of Southland, lias been appointed to the staff of the Pahiatua Hospital. Owing to illness in her family, Miss Small has resigned from the staff of the Masterton Hospital. The man who was drowned in the Whareama River on Sunday whilst bathing wag namod James Curry. The body is reported to have been recovered on Monday afternoon. Tho Minister of Public Health has consented to the erection of additions to the Nurses' Home at the Masterton Hospital, and alterations to the present administrative block. Our Featherston correspondent states that Mr. J. T. Bickness, who lias been taking an active interest in the matter of having a sugar of milk plant established in the South Wairarapa, has received definite assurances as to a plant being available, also advico that an expert in tho manufacture of sugar from whey can be engaged in America. The mover has not been able to secure definite endorsement from the Featherston Co-operative Dairy Company; as to his project, but it is being given consideration by dairy companies throughout the district, and eventually there should be concrete results.
