« MEETING OF THE CENTRE PAIRS TOURNEY AT EASTJiIt. Messrs. S. Underwood (president), W. 11. Morrnh (Lyall Bay), H. Ballinger (Island Bay), TV. C. Powell (Eastbourne), G.. Hogben (Khaudallah), G. Allport (Hutt), G. Hendry (Hataitai), V. Dimock (Thorndon), J. Doherty (Kelburn), A. Wyllie (Wellington), K-. W. Shallcrass (.To Hiwi), and W.. F. Bonnie (Petone) wero present at a meeting of the Wellington Bowling Centre held in the Wellington club's pavilion last evening. On tho motion of Mr. Dimock, seconded by Mr. Hogben, it was decided that tho final games between Newtown and Victoria ill the inter-club competition bo played on Saturday next. It was decided to hold a patriotic pairs tournament at Easter. In discussing on which days play should take place it was pointed out that suburban services by boat and train would greatly inconvenience suburban clubs. Mr. Powell' said that the Eastbourne Club players would not be able to get across in' time for the first game. Other members pointed out that tho restricted tramway services would also have to be considered if Good Friday were taken into consideration. Mr. Powell suggested that, play should take place on Saturday, Monday, and Tuesday. . Mr. H. Ballinger moved that four games of 16 heads be played on the Saturday and Monday only, finals to be on the Tuesday. This was seconded and carried. The entrance fee was fixed at 10s. per pair, entries to close on Monday, March 25. A meeting of the centre is to be held on Tuesday, March 26, to arrange the draw and the greens. It was decided that the net proceeds of the tournament should be handed over to some patriotic fund to be decided by the centre. Mr. I'owell (Eastbourne) drew attention to the laxity which existed on the Hataitai and Thorndon greens in not providing anything in the way of refreshments to the contestants in the championship singles and pairs. He did not know who was .responsible— whether it was the clubs or the centre— but (in the ca'se of the pairs) it was too much to ask a man to play for sis hours on end without being offered a cup of tea. Mr. V. Dimock (Thorndon) said that afternoon tea was provided by his club. There was ample provision mado, indeed they had to give away a lot of the food. Mr. Powell stated that Mr. Roberts (tho centre's secretary) told him there was no afternoon tea for them. The chairman suggested that perhaps Mr. Roberts was actuated by a desire to get the games finished before it became ton dark for play. Mr. Hendry apologised for the Hataitai Club, saying that no club was inclined to be more hospitable, but on the occasion mentioned the matter must have been overlooked. Mr. Powell said that personaJly h« was not greatly concerned, but ho raised the matter in order that it should not recur. The chairman referred to the unsportsmanlike practice of making remarks from the bank during a championship game. During the pairs games at Thorndon it was noticed on several occasions that those oil the bank offered gratuitous advice to players hefore playing a shot. On one particular occasion tho.remarks were"of such a charactcr that an old experienced player engaged in one of the games asked tho interjector to "Come out and have a go yourself!" All the delegates wero of opinion that the practice was highly objectionable, and that tho umpire should check it at once. Complimentary references were made to the good work done by Mr: Harry Mayer, as- official bowl tester, and also for his action in instructing the new tester in his methods of testing bowfs of different shapes, and sizes. Mr. W. Ronnie raised an important point respecting testing by stating that in a case which had been brought under his notice where a man had sent in his howls to bo stamped a tester had sent them back practically ruined. He did not think a tester shwild alter bowls without the knowledge of the owner. Others present supported the statement that bowls had been altered without any notice of instruction to do so having been given. The chairman said that .the tester was probably under the impression that the owner expected him to alter them if they did not meet the test. If it were left to him he would explain tho situation, a course which the meeting approved. CHAMPION RINKS TOURNEY. Tho first round in the champion of champion rink tourney was played on the Wellington Club's green in fine weather yesterday afternoon. Tho green was a little grippy as the result of the rain that fell during the preceding night, and after the sun wont off the green a good deal of push was needed to get up, as somo of the players found to their disadvantage. Tho games yesterday afternoon were between tjie representatives of the Wellington and Otaki Clubs on one rink and the Petone and Lyall Bay Clubs on ! another. In the first case Otaki established a lead early in the game, and at one stage wero six points to tho good; then, probably owing to a feeling of comparative safety, they played more loosely, throwing up a good deal of short wood. Wellington took advantage of the opportunity, and at one stage Horner, by chipping out an Otaki bowl, lay five shots and-in the lead. Otaki spruced up a little at this turn in tho wheel of fortune and crept up again, until a lucky trio on the nineteenth head brought them level with Wellington—l 7 all. On the twentieth head Wellington scored a couple, and on tho final head all the Otaki men fell short, whilst' Wellington swarmed in round the jack. The Otaki skip had no chance, as he never had a | bowl behind the. jack. Ho essayed to burn the head, but failed, and Wellington lay two (perhaps three), and tho game. The game between Petone and Lyall Bay was fairly oven until half way through,' when the superior forces under Beynoti (Potone's skip) drew ahead and won with ease. The scores were: —Wellington : Roberts, Ledger, Gooder, Horner (s.), 21. Otaki: K. H. Bright, J. Bills, H. Oliver, A. Bright (s.), 17. Petone: M'Ewan, Robertson, Mclhuish. Beynon (s.), 21.
