» DEMAND FOR. NEW AWARD. Tho Amalgamated Society of Eugtncers has filed new demands with th<* Conciliation Comnr'ssioner (.Mr. Newton) with regard to motor mechanics. Tho following are the chief clauses:— Hours of work: -14 hours shall constitute a week's work. , Eight hours shall be worked in the first live days of the week, and on Saturday four hours shall be worked. Overtime: All time worked iu excess of the hours mentioned in clause 1 hereof in any one day shall count as overtime, and shall bo paid at double ordinary rate. Any worker called to work before the ordinary time for commencing work (8 a.m.) shall be paid overtime rates, and the same shall apply to workers called to work after 5 p.m. Apprentices shall not be allowed to work more than six hours' overtime in any one week, and such overtime shall iu no way interfere with their attechnical classes. Apprentices shall not bo called upon to work overtime until they have reached tho age of 18.

Holidays: The recognised holidays shall be as follow: Saturday afternoon, Sunday, Good Friday, Easter Saturday, Easter Monday,' Christmas Day, Boxing Day, New Year's Day, January 2, Labour Day, King's Birthday, Anniversary Day, and Show Day. Any timo worked upon the aforesaid holidays shall be paid at double ordinary rates. Overtime worked on holidays shall bo paid at double overtime rates. Wages: Tho minimum rates of wages to be paid to the following class .■ of workers shall'be: For motor mechanics, 2s. 3d. per hour. Wages to be paidweekly in the employer's time. Dotinition of Motor Mechanic: For the purpose of this award, a motor mechanic is a person who has served five years at the engineering trade, and who is in the repair, construction, or assembling of motor-cars or motor-cycles, or in tho upkeep of the plant or machinery ncc.essary thereto, but does not include a salesman or assistant who works in connection with covers or tubes, washing, cleaning, or polishing, or adjusting of lamps, or tho driver of a car. Outside Work: Special provision is made for payment and allowances for work done outside the employers' establishment. . Tools: The employer shall provido tho workers with all the tools for carrying out the work. . . Apprentices: Lengthy provision is asked'for governing the employment of apprentices. The rate of wages suggested is as follows: —For the first, year, 12s. 6d. per week; second year, . 17s. 6d.; third year, 225. Cd.; fourth \ year, 30s. j fifth 40s. Ah fldditional ob. is asked for in the case of apprentices who pass examinations in motor engineering, and the period or apprenticeship is set down at nvo years. An employer shall not bo deemed to discharge his duty towards an apprentice if ho fails to keep hmi at work owing to slackness,- and 110 emplover shall be allowed to take apprentice unless lie has lathes, drilling machines, and vyces to.enable him to properly train such apprentices.
