TOWN PLANNING

MEETING OF THE ASSOCIATION.

A special meeting- of _ the Greater Wellington Town Planning and Municipal Electors' Association was held in the Accountants' Society's Chambers last evening. The gathering was of a very-enthusiastic nature. .Mr. T. Ballinger was in the. chair. A formal welcome was extended to Mr. Bold, a

delegate from the Nelson Association. The main purpose of the meeting wiis to consider "town planning propaganda." In the absence of Mr. Leigh Hunt, the subject was introduced by Mr. G. Canvell Cooke. Mr. Cooke heartily commended Mr. Hunt's suggestion, which was that active steps he taken to disseminate tho association's propaganda throughout, the country. In order to bring the matter to a bead, lie moved that "lantern Icctures lie arranged for in Wellington'ancl in the various suburbs mid in other parts of the Dominion, as might be found possible, dealing with- the subject of town planning, so as to forcibly bring before the minds of the people the advantage to be derived by the establishment of such a system."

The motion was seconded by Mr. Peel, who, in stressing tlio necessity of soundly financing tho proposed work, announced that he would donate £1 Is. to further the propaganda. Mr. Lambert emphasised tliat there great a need fir stimulating interest among members of tlio society as in the rank's of the outside, public/ In the course of a general discussion it was pointed out that the work should include the engagement of competent lecturers throughout the Dominion. Education was tlio keynote to the situation. The motion was carried unanimously. •The progress of the work in Nelson was touched upon by Mr. Bold, who said that it would eventually be found that the people of that town were following up the subject e'junlly as enthusiastically as was the case in Wellington. Members then iiululcod ill a comprehensive discussion, the biirdsn _of which wsr, the desirableness of giving tlio public some lead in the selection of candidates for municipal offices. This was necessary in order to securc a better class of representatives oil many municipal coticcrtis which were at present run in a very haphazard manner. In particular it urged that a better class -of councillor lie brought forward for election on the Wellington City Council. Then, and not until then, would the city 'come into its own. . The matter will be discussed more fully at the general meeting.
