Messrs. J. C. Speddhig, Ltd., have (says the Auckland "Star") received advice that it is -believed there that the burned wreckage recently cast ashore on- the East Coast is that of a three-masted schooner bound to' Wellington, and now about six weeks overdue from America. The vessel mentioned is a wooden vessel of 243 tons gross, with a length of 120 ft., and was built in 1881. Her .owners are the Parifio States Trading Company, San Francisco. She left America with a cargo of benzine, consigned to Messrs. Bannatyne and Co., of Wellington, and a deck cargo of California redwood lumber and shingles consigned to Messrs. Long and Co. It is signiQcant that the benzino caso washed aslioro ,in tho same neighbourhood as the .other wreckago bore Messrs. , Bannatyno's mark, the letter 0 .within a diamond At the annual meeting of the Wellington Typographical Union, held on Fobruary 2, a motion was carried endorsing the published opinion of the Secretary of Labour that the Industrial Conciliation find Arbitration Act should be amended in the direction of making provision for payment of benefits to members of industrial unions. The resolution was forwarded to the ltight Hon. AV. F. Massey, Prime MinJster, as Minister of Labour, and his reply was considered by the board of management at its meoting on Saturday last, which was to tho effect that tbu motion would receivo careful consideration. The letter concluded: "It should be understood that if legislation in tho directioii proposed is introduced, adequate provision will be required on tho lines of those made in regard to friendly societios, to ensnro that tho schemo adopted by any union is carried out on a sound actuarial basis." The board decided to reply recording its protest at the continuous efforts made by tho Government to restrict tho _ liberties of trade unions iu using their funds for the customary benefits for their members.
