HIDES AND SKINS
. NEW ARRANGEMENT ~LDIITED. "Apparently a- mistake has been made in tho announcement by the Prime Minister that the price of both hides and skius are to decline," stated Mr! N. L. Macbeth, secretary, of the Canterbury Frozen Meat Company, to a "Sun" representative. "The change in values as submitted and agreed w at the conference of interests held during the week in 'Wellington solely effected hides and the position as % as the prices of skins are concern?,» remains the same." • ! Mr. Macbeth said that for some time now values paid for hides in the Dominion had been above those ruling' elsewhere. The drop was inevitable, and wnild be about- L}d. per lb. As far as pelts were concerned, the freezing companies had practically an open market in England, but tvere unable to export elsewhere. This fact made for practically a total prohibition, as it was impossible to secure freight. The conference therefore made a recommendation that the. Imperial Government _ should requisition the pelts it required and allow the companies to' seek approved markets for the balance. There would thus be an opportunity., to secure a inarket in America. ;
