NAPIER PARK MEETING LADOGEUR WINS THE GUP. (By Telegraph—Special Correspondent.) Napier, March 8. Tho Napier Park races opened in fine weather, but raiu commenced at 3.30, and the traok was very heavy owing to tho previous days of rain. Tho course will bo heavier on the second day. There was an exooUent attendance. Tho totaUsator handled £16,330, compared with £16,385 on the lirst day last'year. Hendra was not anything liko the shortpriced favorite anticipated in the Hack Surdloß and there was very little between him, The Summit, and Sensitive. At the start Fornio led, with Hendra next. Hendra jumped badly opposite tho stand, and lost a lot of ground, but ho ran to the front at the half mile and was not again troubled. The Summit was several lengths away and; Sensitive just beat I'ornio, ' who was the only other starter. Sensitive got galloped on ; and was badly cut on the hocks. Tho | four runners were all greatl,y at tho finish, which will give an idea of tho heavy state of the going. Silver and Black and Itawakore, who drew tho inside berths, were backed in that order for tho EsK Handicap, but the former failed to jump out and lost her chances.' Rawakoro got stopped soon after the start and lost a lot of ground. Pao had a big lead for half the journey, but then Queen Lizzio and Lady Gazoley ran to her. In the end Eawakoro camo with a rush and won by half a length, and Quoen Lizzio just beat Lady Gazelcy, and in a line came Powder King, Pao, and Silver and Black. Tho lastrnained will do a lot better in her next start. The totalisator investors woro very wide of the mark in estimating the Oup chances. .Vagabond was favourite, with the'Lyanar bracket next in demand. At tho start Pursefiller whipped round and took no part in tho race. Tho early running-was made by Oleffc and Sarah Grand ,and they were in charge of a bunched field till tho straight was reached. Here Trials ami Henry Clay were most prominent of the others, but at tho distance Ladogeur and Potentiality shot out, and in a good finish Ladogeur won by a head. Trials was a length away third, and then camo Cleft, Sarah Grand, and Henry Clay in a lino. Multifual and Vagabond ran badly and Impediment got a bad passage. Tho Ormond owned Warnla was at a very short price in the Trial Handicap, but ho Bhaped very disappointingly and was tho last to paBS the post. At the start Forniline took charge and -led the wholo wav. Manila was in second place for half a mile; but she then tired and went back quickly. Asterial made an cllort in tho straight, but icould not reach Formline, who won easily. Multiplane, was third. B. Deeley, who was having his first xida of tho day, scored on Tavistock in the Weltaj Handicap. Otara ■ was a good favourite and tho Gieborne hoi'Be accounted for tho others, but had no chance with Tavistock, who took charge at tho half mile and won very easily. Mysteriarch was a head in front of Haumakaka, who began slowly, but was finishing very well. Demagoguo was a better favonrite than Oratress in the Sapling Stakes, but another surprise was in store, for Chanty took the lead at the barrier rise and never let the others in. The favourite got oil badly, and so 'did Oratress. Tho latter finished on well, and' aided hy her light weight sho got up and beat Demogoguo for second place. Pavilion was fourth and Pontoon laßt. . Blackall and Mania- were withdrawn from the Hack Welter Handicap, Dusky Eve being a; strong favourite, with Retard second choice. At the Btart Polynesian led a strung-out field, but passing the five furlongs Hylnmi took charge. Tho Hymettus gelding held his own in the straight, and won by' a length from . the little-fancied Torchlight. Polynesian was a good third, and then camo Dusky Eye and Whakahoki, both of whom wero tailcd .off early in tho race. Sunbrfclit was tho last to pass the ■ post. • Heavy Tain was falling when the horses paraded for tho Flymg Handicap. There were twelve runners and the . two topweights were the outsiders. Elocution, a 1 good performer in the mud, was tho actual i favourite. For- the first' two furlongs LlnI geris showed, out, but then Croesus, took oharge, and followed .by Elocution, Bag- ! dad, and Parisian Diamond, ho led into | the Straight. Brady had to ride tho topI weight very hard to hold oil Elocution and Bagdad, and when tho post, was reached only heads separated them. Tho top-weight was-neelcpted on the machine, and pave one of the biggest returns ever 1 ooßted at Napier Park.
