V.R.C. MEETING DEFENCE WINS THE CUP RED FOX SCORES IN THE ASCOTVALE STAKES (Hec. March 7, 9.25 p.m.) Melbourne, March 7. The weather was flue and the going dead but sound for th» second day of the V.lt.C. Autumn Meeting. There was a big attendance, and business was spirited. The d;iy held beautifully, there being a flue gentle breeze. Though the attendance wiiß large it is doubtful if there were as many present as there would have been if the Cup had been run on Tuesday. Wallace Isinglass 6trougly held public fancy in tho Cup until an hour before the race, when he was replaced in the betting by Red Pennant. Defence and Priuca Bardolph were always in the running. The latter tried his Sydney Oun tactics, when he led throughout, WKn. memories of that race, on seeing him leading by six lengths when less than a mile from home, many already proclaimed him the winner.-but Defence, splendidly ridden, caught him in the straight, and headed him at the half-dietance. The winner was loudly cheered. A splendid performance was put up by DumviU Bidden by P. Demp.'ey, he ran away with the Hopeful Stakes, never being headed. Dunwil came out again in the Junior Handicap, and, ridden by Bullock, took command at the distance, and won easily by three lengths. He was carrying only seven pounds less than the fancied Queen Comedy. Palm Leaf, who had won.five races in succession, was fancied again to-day for tho Ascotvale Stakes, Tragic Star being fancied only on his chance for second money. The favourite- was badly beaten by Bed Fox, who seems to be developing into a- Derby colt, beating both of the more fancied horses. The Boiifke Handicap provided another splendid race. King's Bounty was lying fourth entering the straight, and, putting in a fine, strong run, landed the race by half a length. A tribute is naid to the handicapper on his .weighting J the horses, as it has produced some eidting finishes. Results:— HOPEFUL STAKES, a sweepstake of 3 bove. eacU, with. <M aotfs. added.
