OTIRA TUNNEL STRIKE

Very little has been done towards a settlement of the strike at the Otira tunnel owing to absence of the resident engineer. Mr. Ji , . W. Furkert, Publio AYorks Engineer, weub up to-day, to inquire into matters. Tho strike was the outcome of a lamp-boy being put on to firing two boilers, which work was boyond him, as he has a crippled imud. It is alleged that whan he m--formed tho authorities of this ho was told he would bo replaced, as the injury to his hand was not receivittl on the tunnel. He was dismissed on Fiiday last, and tho union iuformed the management that they would cease work on Monday if the lad was not As he was r.ot, the men came out. Work was proceeding apaco in the tunnel before the strike, as the giound encountered was the softest yet mot>
