' Edward Hnyes pleaded guilty under provocation to assaulting some person at present unknown. According to the evidence, the man assaulted, who was .under tho influence ..of liquor, first struck accu'sed, who retaliated with a violent blow on thejaw.' After hearing the evidence.the Magistrate said that 'the man had acted in selfdefence, and dismissed the information.

Edward Posse, an articled seaman of an overseas vessel, was sent to gaol for 14 days' for ■unlawfully absenting him.self from his vessel. For insobriety Johannes Kister, Sigainst whom there was one previous 'conviction, was fined 205., in default soven days' imprisonment. AVebb appeared, proceeded against (Albert E. Shakes, represented by Mr.. C W. Nielsen, to recover £11 155., jhalf the cost of erecting a dividing 'fencei between their properties at Roseneath, ■ An oral agreement between the parties was alleged to have been made, although, no notices were given as required'by., the Fencing Act. The do- , fondant disputed ihe; terms of the Bgroemeut, but was quite willing to pay half the reasonable posts of erectIng the fence. The Magistrate (Mr. S. [E. M'Carthy, S.M.) gave judgment for (plaintiff for £7'los. (including £6 10s. (paid into .Court) and costs. JUVENILE COURT.

Mr. S. E. M'Carthy, S.M., dealt with the cases in the Juvenile Court. The parents of a lad' were charged with failing to.send the boy to school. It Jffas stated for the defence that the parents lived in the back country and jsenfc the lad to Wellington to an aunt bo that he might receive his education. (Either the .aunt or hie eFder brother jjave his ago''to the school authorities jncorrectly. The mother of the lad swore that her son was bora on January 29, 1004, arid was therefore 14 years oi; age and not obliged, to attend 'school. The school register showed [that he ivaa only 13 years of age, And !the Magistrate, held that the register •must be taken as correct, and imposed a fine of 2s. and costs.'

The Supreme Court opened to-day, Mr. • Justice Cooper congratulated the district on its freedom from crime, there being only one criminal casealleged carnal knowledge. His Honour referred to the fact that there was hardly a sitting in the Dominion without a case of sexual offence.
