THE RURAL WORKERS

A MILITARY SERVICE APPEAL.

The secretary of the A. and P. Workers' Union (Mr. C. Grayndler) appeared before the First Wellington Military Service Board .yesterday and appealed for James Thome, editor of the "rural" pago in the "Maoriland Worker." Total exemption was sought, on the ground that Thorn's retention was essential to the organisation 'of the union, and also because Thorno supported his aged mother aud had been classed CI. Thome had served in the South African war. The military representative (Captain Walker) remarked that Thome was not making his allotment to his mother, but to a friend. i Mr. Grayndler said that the person was more than a friend. In any case Thome provided his mother with money. Mr. Grayndler repeated that Thome was essential to the union. He understood rural matters, and had a very necessary knowledge of the War Regulations and the Military Service Act. The organisation was Dominion-wide, and surely one servant of it could bo spared. He saw no prospect of being able to roplace Thome. It would be a, hardship to tho union if Thome were sent to camp, as it would not be ablo to produce its weekly page. _ It was important to keep tho page going as there were now only two organisers for the union—one in each island. The chairman said that tho board was of opinion that sufficient evidence to support the appeal had not been placed before it, and that it would not be an undue hardship to the union if Thome was sent to camp. The > appeal woukl.be dismissed, but leave till May 7 would be' allowed, so that thero would'be time to seek another man. Mr. Grayndler asked for the time to bo extended to June 1, the end of the organisation's year. This request tho board agreed to.
