QUESTION OF CONTROL
4 MINISTER AND THE PUBLIC SERVICE COMMISSIONERS. By Telegraph—Press Association. Hamilton, March 4. The Hon. J. A. Eanan, Minister or Education, opened the addition to the Franklyn School to-day. In the course of his remarks he said he did not possess that control over Departmental officers which many thought. The Minister referred to the powers vested in the Public Service Commissioners. A Minister of Education should be given ,more powers to deal with those in the Department's service. This was necessary to obtain'tho best results. /What now obtained under the Public Service Commissioners' control was not satisfactory, and if he had the opportunity to examine-Messrs. Triggs and Robertson separately, and the heads of the Department, he would have no' difficulty in convincing any reasonable man that a 'condition of affairs existed in the' Civil Service that could not be re'garded as and cnlled for reformative action. This would require special legislation. Replying to thp remarks of the members for Raglan and Waikato , who urged increased votes for" adequate school accommodation throughout the Dominion, the former suggesting a special loan, the Minister said he would willingly furnish increased accommodation if Parliament would vote the necessary money.
