_. 1 • MASTERTON A sitting of the Conciliation Council (us held at Masterton on Tuesday, to consider the Wellington builders and general labourers' dispute. Commissioner W. Newton presided. It was agreed that a settlement be effected upon similar rates of wages aud conditions as contained in the recent agreement arrived at in, connection with the labourers in Napier, Hastings, and Vl'aoganui. . . Tlio number of doaeu eggs received by the "Wairarapa 13gg Circle last you was 32,475, and the amount realised was £2816 18s. 4d. Since the circle was formed in 1910-11,. no fewer than 207,360 dozen eggs have passed through its hands, realising £17,872 Us. 7d. A brilliant meteor passed over Jlasterlon on Tuesday evening, illuminate iiig tlirt whole district.
CARTERTON
The death occurred at Clareville on Mouday morning of Mrs. Janet Monuinft, in her eighty-ninth year. The isle Mrs. Moncrieif was Ijorn at West Galder, Scotland, on July 13, .1829, and came to New Zealand with her husband and family in November, 1884, coming to the 'Wairarapa the next year, and residing for fourteen years at AVaiha'Uekc. Later they took up their'iesidence at Clareville. Her husband predeceased her ten years ago. A grownup family of four sons and three daughters aro left. ,
The quarterly meeting of the Totara Lodge, U.A.0.D., was held on Monday night, Bro. A. Johnson presiding. The new members were initiated into the Older. Receipts for the evening nmounted to £143 19s. Id., and disbursements £55 2s. 2d., which included the maternity bonus payments to brothers of the Order for £4 each, and £27 13s. od. contributions of members who are at the. front.
The annual meeting of subscribers of the Carterton Public Library was only poorly attended, owing to coun-ter-attractions. The report and bal-ance-sheet showed that, the expenditure had amounted to £186 2s. Bd., inciudmg £74 15s. 4d. for the addition to the ladies' room. Eeceipts were .Ul&2 9s. 10d., leaving a debit balance of £3 12s. 10d. The estimates for the current year were as follow:—Librarian's salary, £52; new books, £25 ; papers, etc., reading room, £20; lighting and insurance, £20; sundries, £13: total, £130. The estimated receipts aro:--Subscriptions, £tjo; borough subsidy, £30; county subsidy, £15: total, £3l0; leading a deficiency of £20 to bo raised by other means. The_ election of a committee for the eneuing year was held over till Monday next, in view of the small attendance, and to pive the Borough Council an opportunity to review the position at its monthly meeting. The Victoria Theatre, which was recently destroyed by fire, is to be replaced with an up-to-date hall on the same site.
