THE KARIOI TRAGEDY
o ARREST OF ROBINSON. By Telegraph—Press Association. Taihape, February 25. AVhat appears to liavs been a premeditated murder took place at a hush contractor's camp at Karioi in the early hours of Sunday morning, when a man named Peter Larsen was killed by having his head battered in while asleep, it is alleged, by a fellowworkman named Jack Robinson. It is stated that drink had been taken into the .camp, and that during Saturday night the time was whilcd away with a game of cards. A quarrel arose over the game, but the men parted, and went to their respective beds. Some time after Larsen went to sleep it is said that Robinson canio with some heavy weapon and struck the sleeping man a terriblo blow, killing him instantly, as there was no evidence of a scuffle. . Robinson was arrested at Karioi, and taken to Ohakune, where ho was remanded till tomorrow. An inquest was opened, which was also adjourned till Tuesday. Wanganui, February 25. The local police have been informed that John Robinson has been arrested in connection with the Karioi tragedy. It is alleged he hit the deceased,_ Peter Larsen, on tho head with a pickaxe handle.
