A WATERSIDER FINED. Alfred Agnew, a watereider. was charged in the Magistrate's Court yesterday, before Mr. S. E. M'Carthy, S.M., on the information of DetectiveSergeant Cos,'that oil January 31, at Wellington, he did sell two copies, of the "International Socialist Review" contrary to the War Regulations. Mr. IJ.1 J . J. O'Regan appeared for the defendant, who pleaded guilty. Chief-Detective fioddam sa ; d that the regulation prohibiting the .''Review" being sold here did not come into force until March 9, 1916, and it was only fair to the defendant to say that one of the "Reviews" was printed in New York in January. 1916, and the other was published in April. The "Reviews" were exposed for sale and were purchased.from the defendant. Nothing was known against Agnew. Mr. O'Regan said that his client was in the Socialists' room in Manners Street. He was not an officer of the association, but was there to read some nf the literature. A policeman in plain clothes came in 'and said he wanted to purchase, some'literature. Agnew lookpd about for the secretary, and not finding; him got the key and said lie would see if he could get tlie man what be wanted. The "Reviews" were selected, and tlie constable wanted to pay for them, hut Agnew declined to accept payment, when the man practically forced the money' upon him, saying it was "for the . good of the cause." Acnew had no intention of selling the "Reviews," and he was in the "club-, room quite by accident..
Agnew was fined £2 and costs, and was allowed 14 days in which to find the money.
