He pleaded not guilty to begging alms in Thorndon Quay.- Tho evulonce showea that a polico conslablo from Auckland, who was on a ■visit to tho city on holiday, was in Thorndon Quay on Wednesday, when tho accused accosted the constable on two occasions and begged for money. Ho was seen begging from other people and also stealing .the. lfcv of coal. It was explained that Andorson, who is an able-bodied man. camo from Otaki a few days ago, and was now without any money. When arrested two beer bottles were' found in his possession. As thero was nothing previously known against the accused the Magistrate decided to give him a chance, and convicted and ordered him to come up for sentencowhen called upon. Oill appeared, proceeded against Jolui 11. Hooper, reprenonted by Mr. G. Hiitchiscn. to recover £21 4s. in rcaueet to the rent or two furnished rooms. The plaintiff had taken possession of the rooms (luring tho absonco of the tenant without giving due notice, and a counter-claim for damages and trespass was entered by hi'n. On the counter-claim the Magistrate held that a technical breach had been committed and gave judgment for Hooper for 40s. and costs, and oil the claim judgment was given for nlainliff for £19 and cosls.
