THE TURF

WANGANUI MEETING CUP WON BY CLIENT. (From Our Special Correspondent.) Wangariui, February 21. Tho Wanganui Autumn Meeting opened in glorious weather before a very large attendance. ' Tho. totalißator handled £35,811 as against £31,857 on the first day last yoar,

There was a select field in tho Stewards' Handicap, the best backed being Fionnuala and Volo. After a delay of somo minutes tho field, with tho exception of Sweet Tipperary, went off to a good start-. Volo led Astor and George into the top bend, and prominent amongst the others were Zola and Square Deal. At the three-fur-longs Fionnuala had movei up, and Astor and Ocorgo gavo way. Zola was caught at the distance, but, aided by his light weight, he struggled on well and beat Fionnuala by a very rarrow margin. Square Doal was two lengths away, followed by Volo and George. Gang Awa' and Sen-down failed badly.

Bon d'Or was tho only withdrawal from the Petre Hack Handicap, leaving fourteen runners, liobur was a better favourite than Association and Engari. After the start the last named soon took charge, and'led a strung-out field down the back. The Fcildjng mare was first into the straight, but had to withstand a strong challenge by Association and Hastie. Fifty yards off the post Association was in front, but Engari finished strongly and won by a Kcad. Hastie was a neck away, and then, came Munition, who had been on the sceno nearly all the way.' The Westmere Hurdles drew a field of ten. It wa3 a pretty race and the leading division underwent several changes throughout the two mileß. At the start llarton and Glendalough were prominent, and through tho first mile all jumped well. At this point Sir Fisher had pulled to the front, and he and Glendalough' were In the running with six furlongs to go. Then Traill sent the favourite to the front, but Collector Jumped the fence at the fivo furlongs with him. Tho pair then cut at caoh other for tho remainder of the journey, and Oolleotor, staying on best, beat the favourite by three lengths. Glendalough finished well, a half length away, and then came Want, Sir ,Solo, Sir Fisher, and Portland Lady.

Biplane, who looked a, trifle on tho pretty side, was only opposed by Hymostra and Pinmark in the Jackson Stakes. Ho was sent oat a very short-priced favourite/ and after allowing; Finmark to accompany him for.half the journey, he then ran on by himself, and won very comfortably. | His time was only l-sseo. outside the record i for the race, and '■e could have improved on his considerably had his rider desired.

When the Oup field paraded they were roted a. well-conditioned lot. Menelauß and .Sasanof in particular took the eye, but' Client was sweating freely. Menelaus' closed a good favourite, with Client and Snub evenly backed/ At the start Tressida led by several lengths'from Wishful, with the others bunched, the rear being occupied by Menelaus, Snub and Sasanof. With a milo to go the positions were the same, but at the si ifurlongs tho pace was clapped on. Here the positions were: Tressida, Wishful, .and Master Moutoa, with the others bunched. At the half mile Wishful took charge, and followed by Client, Almo, Dingle, and Menelaus, he led round the bend. Entering the straight Client took charge, and Menelaus, ooming fast, got carried oil the oourse. In the run' home Client won by a couple of lengths from Wishful, with Menelaus, finishing fast, a neck away. Then came Master Moutoa, Almo and Sasanof. The winner was successful in the same race last year, and ho got a tremendous recoption from the crowd. The time was only a second outside the record held by Master Lupin.

Though Bho drew an outside position' at the barrier the Wavcrley-owned' Staccato was a good favourito in tho Juvenile Handicap, and jumping out smartly she led all the way. Philomela, who drew the fence, was her closest attendant into the straight, but then gave way to Oratress. The latter looked like getting second, but Missouri finished very strongly and beat her-by a, hebk, Chantry finished close up fourth..

Signo'rella carried over four figures in the Wiritoa Hack Handicap, while. Bon d'Or, Quinn's Post, and All Over were also well hacked. It was a good raoe through, out and when tho placed horses crossed the lino there wore only heads .between .them. .The'field waß bunched till.the last quarter was entered upon, and then Cooing took charge from Elevate. ' In tho. straight-All Over got- through on the fence, and in a splendid finish won by a head irojm Elevate. Henry Clay was tho same distance away, with Oooinu' clobo up. Bon d'Or and Signorella both ran badly. -, ■ Croesus, .who had. never, looked .better, saw"a very short prico-in the Flying Handicap, while there was plenty of' money for several' of the others. At the start Lingerie and' Koesian- were the-.first to begin, but Croesus Boon joined in. and. Gray steadied Koesian. The two leaders were first. into the straight, when Koesian again took charge, aud won .the race in - a ■ very few strides. CroeBUS and Lingerie stopped badly, and Waimatao ran into seoond place a head in front of Orowhurst. Then came the fast-finish-ing Nystad, with Moutoa Queen. Impediment, and.Croesus next. ■ The winner was w'e.ll supported by his owner on the -strength of a good trial two mornings bofore'the race.
