The appointment of tho Hon. D. H. Guthrie as a member of the Executive Council of New Zealand is announced formally in this week's Gazette.
Tho City Council last evening passed a vote of sympathy with Mr. Justice Herdman m the loss of his wife.
It is announced' that Professor A. P. W. Thomas (Auckland), Messrs. H. F. von Haast (Wellington), G M. Thomson (Dunedin), C. A. Bwen (Wellington), and P. 6. Morgan (Director of Geological Surveys) have been appointed members of the Board of Scicnco and Art. ■
Dr. Barclay, medical superintendent at Wellington Public Hospital, is at present away on his annual leave, and Dr. Fitzgerald is in charge of the Hospital. ,
Mrs. Robertson, of Amesbury Street, Palmerston North, has been _ advised by the Minister of Defence (Sir James Allen) that her son, Sergeant Leonard Robertson, has been awarded the Military Medal for gallantry on the field of action. The Minister conveyed to Mrs. Robertson his congratulations on her, son having gained the coveted distinction. Sergeant Robertson lei New Zealand with the Sixth _ Reinforcements, and has seen service in Gallipoli as well as in. France. He is still on active service "somewhere in France."
Dr. H. R. Mill, Director of the British Rainfall Organisation, who visited New Zealand about five years ago, has been awarded the Symons Gold Medal for 1918 by the 'Royal Meteorological Society for his work in connection with meteorological science.
Mr. W. Dickson Harkness, of Richmond, has been advised that his son, Lieutenant Charles Harkness, who was seriously wounded some four months ago, as the result of which his right leg was amputated above the knee, 1 was still dangerously ill, and his condition was not so good. Lieutenant Harkness, in addition to losing his leg, was severely wounded in the back, -but letters received recently stated that this wound was healed, but the leg was not so satisfactory. The friends cf Mr. Harkness will anxiously await better news. Mr. H. Temple White has been appointed musical director of the newlytormed musical society in connection with the Commercial Travellers' Club. The Defence Department have confirmed the appointment as from January 19 of Canon T. Frilden Taylor,. C.F., as principal Anglican chaplain at Trentham Military Camp. file" executive oE the New Zealand Alliance yesterday passed a motion of regret at the death of Professor H. D. Bedford, and expressing to Mrs. Bedford and her children and tho 1 other relatives of the deceased gentleman its reverent and heartfelt sympathy.
Mrs. E. Cummins, of Christchurch, has been advised that her son, Rifleman E. M. Cummins, was admitted to the Walton-on-Thames Hospital on February 11, suffering from myalgia.
The Rev. Father W. J. Peoples, who for the past twelve months lias been senior curate to the late Very Rev. Dean Carew in Greymoutb, has (says the Christchurch "Press") received notico of his promotion to Waimate, where he succeeds the Rev. Father Aubry in charge of the parish. It is understood that Father Peoples will be succeeded at Greymouth by Father Dalton Campbell, of Newtown parish, Wellington. The Very Rev. Father Paul Aubry, S.M., parish priest of Waimate, Canterbury, has been appointed the successor of the late Very Rev. Dean Carew in the pastorate of Greymouth. Father Aubry formerly was a professor at St. Patrick's College, Wellington. Mr. F. Bond, of Palmorston North, is taking up work as dental surgeon at the Wellington Hospital for six months.
