EDUCATION BOARD

The monthly mooting of tho Wellington Education Board was held yesterday. There were present: Tho Hon. J-. G. W. Aitkon (chairman), Messrs. A. W. Hogg, K. H. Penney, B, Jl'Callum, R. A. Wriglit, M.P., T. Forsytli, W. Allan, E. V. llisliworth, G. London, W. H. Field, and W. Kobboll.

A letter was received from the Minister of Education, stating that Tie was prepared to make adjustments on account of special grants for buildings. The secretary stated that the differ-/ ence botwen grants, estimates, and actual costs amounted to a considerable sum. The Department would now make.up this difference- whero it was shown that the money was actually spent. The Department wrote, notifying that an increase was being made in the capitation allowance to provide for relieving teachers, on condition that the board adoptod a definite set of rules for the treatment of teachers absent on sick leave. The.Department approved of the establishment of. a school at Snlwiiy, also the rent of the building nt 12s. per week. ' Apnlicatioiifj for tho establishment of aided schools at Maud Island, Waitai, and Pino, Valley were referred to the inspectors. ' The New Zealand Educational Institute wrote, asking for infoimation as to the number of married teachers in the service, not in receipt of £156 a ytar, the minimum salary for married men in the Public Service. The institute wrote that the recont increase of this minimum was not to apply to teachers, as they were not deomod to be Civil Servants. This, it was urged, was a discouragement to the recruiting of men for the toaching service.— The board agreed lliat the information he supplied. The following resignations were accepted :—-Mrs. Ahradscn, sole teacher, Cr.stlopoint, February 28; Mrs. A. ITowell, sole teacher, Mangnmahoo, April 30; Miss K. M! Paine, solo teacher, Waikawa Bay, March .'il; Miss E. Mason, soln teacher, Hillersdon, Jammry 31; Miss L. P, Simpson, sole teacher, Upton Downs aided school, January 31; Miss M. Reese, secondary assistant, Pahiatua District High School, March 31; Miss W. E. M'Tlardio, secondary assistant, Pahiatim District High School, March 31; Miss A. P. Ramvcll, assistant, Mount Cook Infants, February 28 or March 31; Mrs. Cautlay, assistant, Normal School, March 31; Miss E. Ton , , assistant, Gladstone, January 31; Miss F. Rose, assistant, TCorokoro, January 31: Miss C. Maskttll, domestic science instructress, February 28. Leave of absence was granted to Messrs. A. Jackson and E. K. Rishworth (Training College students), and W. R. Kennedy, pupil teacher, Ngaio, for Expeditionary Force sorvice.
