11. D. Bedford, of Otago University, lost his life yesterday mutrning while bathing in tho Mair Pool at Whangarei. His cry for help wan 1 , heard by a previous bather, who retmimed to find Dr. Bedford sinking for . the last time. The would-be rescuer was unable to locate him. ,■ Others madW attempts by diving, but all were unsuccessful. Tho-body was recovored by db'agging two hours later. Diy Bedford, with the Rev. John Dawson, president of tho New Zealand Alliamico, had been on a lecturing tour in tfo far north. Thoy returned to Whangarei on Saturday. Dr.. Bedford's homo is at Mosgiel. He ltMives a wife and four children. , Auckland, February 18. Newns was received last evening of the death by drowning at Whangarei early yesterday morning of Dr. Bedford, Rrofessor of Economics and History at (Otago University. Dr. Bedford arrived in /Auckland about January 23 on a. lecturing tour in the interests of temperance. Ho had .>poken at several osntres, and lie was to havo addressed a. public meeting in tho Auckland Towa Hall on Wednesday evening. Ha reached Whangarei _on Saturday evening in company with the Rov. John Daw'son,, secretary of the New Zealand iUliance. and was the guest of the Re«'. E. Clark, Methodist minister. He toft the house early yesterday morning n.'ith the intention of bathing in the ,Mair Pool, in the nill water of the Hatbea River, a favourite hesort of swiinmars. He met 11. Cooper, a local resident, con-ing away from tie pool. Mr. Cooper pointed <ut to him tho dangoitpus spcts and currents. Cooper had' not proceeded far when he heard criesl for help. Hurrying |.ack, he reached ftho Mair Pool just as Professor Bedfoird was sinking. Although only an -.indifferent swimmer, Mr. Cooper attempted to rescue tho drowning man. M'is efforts, however, were unavailing. ,Ho then ran for help, returning with:, several swimmers, who attempted to recover the body by diving. After sii vcral futile attempts the police were wt for, and the body was obtained by dragging tho pool with ! At the inquiist the Coroner returned a verdict that .death was due to drowni ing. The extern* f aji ed to disclose I that deceased jivas in ill-health or that I there was any external injury.
A very large audience, which attended the Wang«mii Opera House last ni«ht, on the occasion of a lecture by Professor TruolWood, passed a vote cxpressing regret flt Dr. Bedford s death and conveying .condolences to ins widow.—Press iiJssn.
