Cabinet yesterday appointed Mr. Guy Morris to be Resident Commissioner at Nine, Cook Islands. Mr. Morris served with the Now Zealand Forces in France, and returned to New Zealand wounded.

Dr. K. Boxer, of Hastings, has been iippointed acting-president of tho New Zeiiland Returned Soldiers' Association, in succession to Mr. .Tamos D. Harper, ivho has accepted a seat on the War Pensions Board. Dr. Boxer left New Zealand with the Main Ikdy as adjutant to the first New Zealand ambulance He .took part in the landing at Gallipoli. and was invalided in August, 19]5. On his return to New Zealand lit was discharged as unfit for further service.

On the application of Mr. A. Dunn, in the Supreme Court yesterday, Mr. Nordon Arthur James Barker was admitted as a solicitor by the Chief Justice, Sir Robert Stout. In congratulating Mr. Barker, His Honour remarked that he had reached his majority on Saturday last, and was' admitted a solicitor-two days later.

A Press Association telegram from Gisporno states that the Hon. William Morgan, M.L.C., an old resident of that district and long connected with educational matters, died yesterday after a lengthy illness. The lato Mr. Morgan was born in County Kildare, Ireland, in 1851. He arrived at Port Chalmers in 1874, and removed to Gisborno 111 1883. For several years he served on the local Borough Council, and in 1900-1 was president of the Gisborne Chamber of Commerce. In 1576 Mr. Morgan married a daughter oi the late Mr. George Browne, of II.M. Customs, Liverpool. . "1

Mr. Robert Rowe, of_ Gladstone, Wairarapa, will celebrate his hundredth birthday to-day.

News has been received that Sergeant J. H. Luke, son of Mrs. Samuel Luke, of Wellington,,and a nephew of the Mayor (Mr. J. P. who waß seriously wounded in action, is' returning to Wellington.

Mr. R. J. Gilmour (editor of the' "Southland Times") has arrived in Wellington. He will remain to attend tho .Press Conferences, which commence next Monday, and continue for several days.

Reference to the death of Mrs. A. L. Hordman was made at the meeting of Wellington North electors in St. Paul's Schoolroom last night. The following motion was carried: "That this meeting desires to record its deep sympathy with their late member, Mr. Justice Herdman, and the members of his family, in their great sorrow." Private advices have been received by Mr.. T. F. Cheeseman, of Auckland, that his son, Captain G. S. Cheeseman, has been promoted to the rank of major in the Auckland Mounted Rifles. Major Cheeseman, who is now in his twenty-fifth year, is a native of Auckland, and was educated, at King's College, Remuera. Ho left Auckland cariy in. 1915, with the rank of lieutenant. After a short stay in Egypt he was transferred, to Gallipoli, and was • shot through the leg during the severe lighting of August, 1915. At the Ewlsleigh Palace Hospital, London, he made a quick recovery, and in January, 1916, was able to rejoin his regi-r-inent in Egypt.' He took part in the \ advance from the Suez Canal, and tho operations in the Sinai Peninsula, after which he received his captaincy. He was present at tho capture of El Arish. at tho battles of Mughdabad, Rafa, and , the first attempt to 'capture Gaza, He ■J hat, been through the whole of General \ Alloiiby's recent offensive, including jl the light at Beersheba, the advance on E Asn.ilon, the capture of Jaffa, and the ; fighting in that region.
