RIFLE SHOOTING
WELLINGTON CHALLENGE SHIELD. So far as Wellington shooting weather goes the conditions for the Challenge Shield match of the Wellington City and Suburban Killo Club Union on Saturday afternoon were all that could be desired. At intervals tho light was poor, but there was an absence of tho usual trickiness in the breezes which the rifle range at JUiramar usually stores up for marksmen. Each of tho four Wellington clubs was represented. -It was generally expected that tho Petone Club, on its present eeason'a performances, would relieve tho Ivatori Club of the senior shield, which the latter club has held since lust year. These expectations were, however, doomed to disappointment, as the Petoue Club was placed in the position of having four absentees and firing with two emergencies were still two men short of a full team. The team nevertheless proceeded through the match under its hopeless disabilities and received a well-earned ovation from the other competing teams 'on its sporting attempt. Commencing at 300 yards, the Ivarori Club established a lead of 16 points from the Suburbs Club, the scores of Halliday and Dayman being well backed up by_the remainder of the ICarori team. The' Old Navals Club followed Suburbs 10 points behind. i Going back to 500 yards, the Suburbs team at once set out to make good. Harris, Spencer, Gray, and Smart (among the first men down) quickly brought the team to within a winning position. On the next target tho Karoris were not "answering the helm," and with only one big score (by Bulford) the points which they had in hand were lost, and Suburbs emerged with a three-point lead. Old Navals dropped another 10 points from second place.
The concluding stage at 600 yards resolved itself into a struggle between Suburbs and Karori. Both teams shot well, but Karori was unequal to the task of recovering its lost position, and the Suburbs Club improving its lead by 7 points secured the shield by a one-point-per-inan margin. The Petone Club produced at this last range, through Rifleman Ryan the best range-score for the day., At Hie conclusion of the match, congratulatory speeches were riidg in favour of the* winning club and the runnersup. The veteran marksman (G. Halliday) was also congratulated from all sides on his excellent aggregate score. The arrangements for the match were capably bundled bv President 'Rabe, of the Old Nnvals Club, while the supervision by President M'Donald, of the Highland Club, of the registration of scores from the trench effected an added element of smoothness.
