DR. H. D. BEDFORD

■ : —♦ DROWNED AT WHANGAREI. A private telegram received in Wellington yesterday reported that Dr. H. D. Bedford, ex-member for Dunediu, bad been drowned at Whangaroi. He is said to have gone for a bathe by himself and failed to return. Dr. Bedford was born at Leeds, Yorkshire, in 1877, and came to New Zealand with his parents in 1886. He studied law in Aiickland and Wellington, and won his B.A. degree at Dunediu in 1899, when he was awarded the Macandrew prize for political economy. Hβ became an M.A. in 1901. with honours in political science. He contested the Caversham seat unsuccessfully in that year, but was elected as an Independent Liberal for Dunedin in 1902. He lost the seat in 1905. Since then Dr. Bedford had taken -part in public affairs outside Parliament. He was a prominent Prohibitionist. He practised law in Dunedin. During his term in Parliament Dr. Bedford was associated with the late Mr. T. E. Taylor, the late Mr. G. Laurenson, and Mr. F. M. B. Fisher in tho "New Liberal" movement. About twelve months ago Dr. Bedford gave up his vocation to go as a field secretary to the Y.M.C.A., and was absent from New Zealand in this duty for about four months. He also gave up a good deal of time recently to a series of lectures on eugenics under the auspices of the Y.M.C.A.
