A SEA PERIL
r MINES OFF CAPE FAREWELL I ; ONE TAKEN AND EXPLODED i ' ANNOUNCEMENT BY NAVAL ; AUTHORITY The following statement was issued ' by the Naval Adviser to the New Zea- ; land Government (Captain Hall-Thomp-son) yesterday:— The Naval Adviser to the New Zealand Government announces''that an enemy mine \ ' has been discovered, and ex- • ploded, off Capo Farewell, Cook Strait. : The mine was, however, in the area which has been suspected for some time past by the Naval authorities, and which all shipping had been warned to avoid. It was in this locality that the '11fated Port Kembla blew up, and it will no doubt be suggested that tho ship was destroyed by striking a mine. Evidence at the inquiry all went to show that the explosion was internal, but there is now ground for the suspicion that it may. have been the result of striking amine. :
