A POLICE RAID

-'..'.ALLEGED GAMBLERS ARRESTED v CHARGES ACAINST FOURTEEN •v -,\ '■■[ PERSONS. ■'A police raid in the city yesterday resulted in the arrest of fourteen men on charges laid under the Gaming Act. The raid was the outcome of investigations that have been conducted during the last two months by DetectiveSergeant Cox and Detective Carney, and it was wide enough ill its operation i'to cause something of a flutter in betting circles. The arrested men were brought into Court in the afternoon and remanded on bail. The ..detectives divided forces for the occasion. Detectivo Carney, with Detective Torrance and Plain-clothes Con- ■ stable Burnett, raided tho tobacconist's and hairdresser's shop of John Laidlaw Walling, in Willis Street. They arrested Walling on a charge of keeping "a common gaming-house and his eon, Arthur Walling, on a charge, of assisting in the management of tho house. Seven men were found on the premises at' tho time of the raid, and .were arrested on charges of being ; .found; without lawful excuse on the J promises of' a comi'iion gaming-house. These men were: George William Lees, Edgar Albert Edwards, Frank Greaney, Bernard O'Connell, Arthur 'Cunningham, George Avery and Frcd- . erick Knigge. Later the party, headed by Detective Carney, arrested at the Central "Hotel Henry Martindale, who was charged with having made bets on licensed premises, to wit, the Aw Commercial :Hotel. •In the meantime, Detcotive'Sergeant Cox, , with Plain-clothes Constables Black and Russell, had been operating in other directions. The first man they arrested was James Rogers, a carrier, who was stopped while driving, down Manners Street. The charge against him was that, being a bookmaker, ho had made bets on licensed premises, to wit, the Empire Hotel. Ho was charged also with having laid totalisator odds, and published. double betting ; . charts. Tho next man arrested was Percy Winters, employed as porter at tho ■ Duke of Edinburgh Hotel. Tho charges against Winters were that, being a bookmaker, ho had taken bets on licensed promises, and that he had issued double betting; charts. Henry James Wales was arrested a little later on charges of having made . ' bets on licensed promises, while Clarence Adolphus Le Soeur was arrested on charges of having published betting , odds in the form of a double chart and laid-totalisator odds.

The arrested men appeared in tho Magistrate's Court in the afternoon. They were admitted to bail, and remanded till to-dav.
