The army is styled "The Red Army of Workers and Peasants." The men are paid fifty roubles (nominally £5) a month. RUMANIA DISARMING WHOLE DIVISIONS OF RUSSIANS THE CAMPAIGN IN BESSARABIA. (Rec. February 5, 8.20 p.m.) London, February 4. Rumanian official telegrams state that part of the Rumanian Army is fbhting and disarming tho Russian troops. The disintegration of the Russian front in Moldavia is increasing daily. Whole units proceeding to Russia are attacking the Rumanian towns and villages en route. The Rumanians, after twenty-four hours' fighting, disarmed a Russian division and captured fifty guns, with which the Russians were bombarding Galata. Tho Rumanians also disarmed and sent to Russia an army corps which had attacked Valticeni, in Moldavia. Owing to the Red Guards stopping supplies from Bessarabia for Moldavia, Rumania, at the request of tho Bessarabian Government, has occupicd the food centres in Bessarabia and also the Kish-inelf-Jassy railway. The Rumanians aro now fighting tho Bolsheviks throughout Bessarabia.—Renter. REPORTED GERMAN ULTIMATUM (Rec. February 5, 8.20 p.m.) Copenhagen, February 4. It is reported that Germany is sending an ultimatum to the Maximalists. The Government is demanding the acceptance of tho peace conditions. In the event of a refusal military measures will bo taken forthwith. If need be, Rumania will bo treated in the same 'manner—Aus.-N.Z. Cablo Assn. UKRAINE RECOGNISED AT BREST LITOVSK Amsterdam, February 4. After hearing a statement by the representative of the Ukrainian Rada (Assembly) at tho Brest Litovsk Conference, the Central Powers' delegation decided to recognise the representative of the Rada as entitled to speak for the Ukraine—Reuter. LIGHT ON THE POSITION IN UKRAINE (Rec. February 5, 8.20 p.m.) >. London, February 4 Reuter states that light is thrown upon 'the obscure situation iu tho Ukraine by a speech delivered by a representative of the Rada at the Brest Litovsk Conference. Ho stated that 90 per cent, of tho Rada's candidates were elected to the Constituent Assembly, as compared with 10 per cent, of the Bolshevik candidates. The Ukrainian Convention of Soviets at Kiel! overwhelmingly declared for tho Rada, whereupon a small group (if tho Bolshoviki went to Kharkoff and declared itself the now Government of tho Ukrainian Peoples' Republic, though it hardly represented the town of Kharkoff, much less the republic.—Reuter. RUPTURE AT BREST LITOVSK FORESHADOWED. (Reo. February 5, 8.20 p.m.) i Amsterdam, Fobruary 4. Messages from Berlin state that the Republics of Siberia, Bessarabia, Turkestan, aud also Persia, havo resolved to send representatives to Brest Litovsk. The sudden-return of Dr. von Kuhlmann and Count Czernin to Berlin is regarded as foreshadowing a rupture at Brest Litovsk. Von Hindonburg and Von Ludendorff havo arrived to confer with the Kaiser and Count von Hertling, Dr. von Kuhlmann, Count Czcrnin, and Talaat Pasha regarding tho pcaco issue-—Aus.-N.Z. Cablo Assn. REPORTED RECOGNITION OF BOLSHEVIK GOVERNMENT PRESIDENT WILSON'S ATTITUDE. New York, February 4. The "Daily News" correspondent at New York says it is believed that President- AVilson intends to recognise tho Bolshevik Government, on tho ground that such action would provo the. democratio sincerity of tlje Allies, and help the people's movement in Germany.—Aus.-N.Z. Cable Assn. ! SWEDISH WARSHIPS FIRED ON (Bee. February 5, 8.20 p.m.) Stockholm, February 4. Tho Russian coastal batteries fired on Swedish naval vessels that were bringing Swedes from Finland. Tho Russians explain that they thought tho vessels "were carrying troops nnd munitions—"The Times."
