THE HUNDRED YARDS LIMIT

S FOR SURF BATHERS. Referring to the recent inn of accidents to bathers at Lyall Bay, the Mayor (Mr. J. P. Luke) said that no one regretted the fatality of Saturday • last, as well as tho other unfortunate ; incidents of tho last week-end, inoro than ho did. So that everyone may , enjoy the pleasures afforded by the fine of Burf-washed beach at the 'bay, the Mayor wishes to appeal, perisonally and on- behalf of the City Council, to every bather to take every care that such accidents do not recur. Even the best of swimmers must exercise care in respect of the distance 1 they go out in tho wator, if it is only as an example to others of less capacity in tho water, and in tho interests of strangers to the beach who havo not the same knowledgo of tho conditions as havo regular frequenters of the beach. In that respoct he would urge every bather not to venture out farther than 100 yards from tho water's edge, as beyond that imaginary line thero appeared to exist the danger of nn undertow which at times tested the Capacity of strong -swimmers. By observing that precaution thoy would be always within tho margin of coin- ' parativo safety, and would be setting ' an oxample to newcomers to the beach who wished to onjoy the pleasures of the surf.
