HIDDEN IN A CHIMNEY
. ABSENTEE SOLDIER CAUGHT. An absentee from Trentham Camp j was arrested by the police late on Sat- ( nrday night in a house m Hobson | Street, Auckland. Their first search ; in tho rooms failed to reveal any traco lof the man, but the constables were , convinced that ho was in the building, , and so made a more careful investiga--1 tion. Finally they pulled away a screen which was covering a fireplace, and by jso doing disclosed a pair of feet. The ' soidier had secreted himself in the ; chimney, but evidently had been uni able to pull his feet up out of sight. I He was handed over to tho military authorities, who sent him under es--1 cort to one of the forts. On Sunday he made a sensational escape from his cell by bending thc> stout iron buTs outside the window. Thisfeat of strength is considered remarkable.
