FIRES IN THE CITY

SEVERAL OUTBREAKS YESTERDAY. There were several fires in the city yesterday. Shortly after 9 o'clock in the morning the brigade was called to 170 Taranaki Street, a dwelling occupied by Rhodft Martin, and owned by Mr. Seigrief, of Daniel Street. The fire was in the wash-house, which was badly damaged. Tho outbreak was caused through some clothes coming in contact with tho copper fire. The building was insured in the National offico for £400.

Just beforo noon thoro was a call to a Tinakori Road house occupied by E. R. Williams, and owned by Mr. Hatch, of Hobson Street. Some curtains and woodwork near the windows were damaged. Insurance on the contents was £100 in the Atlas offico.

At 1 p.m. there was a grass fire on th* Rhodes estate, AVadestown, and about ail acre and a half of grass was burnt.

At 8.35 p.m. an alarm was given for a fire in AY. and J. Staples, Ltd.'s boot factory in Ghuznee Street. The fire was in tho clicking room, which department, and its contents wore badly damaged. Tho other portions of the building suffered from heat, water, and smoke. Tho contents were insured in the Sun and South British oflices for £12,000. and the British United has a cover of £3500 on the . machmcs. Tho building is insured m the Royal for £1500.
