The Right Hon. Sir Joseph Ward, Minister of Finance, returned from the north yesterday.

A Press Association telegram states that private advice received in Christchurch reports that Mr. E. D. Hoben, a well-known New Zealand journalist, died in Melbourne on Sunday afternoon after a long illness.

Mr. F. 11. Russell, who has been Chief Inspector for the Ner/ Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Co., Ltd., in New Zealand, for tho past ten and a half yoars, has retired owing to continued ill-health, and intends to reside in Victoria. Mr. Clarke Johnson iias been appointed by the London Board to tako the vacant position.

Cabled information has been received, says a Press Association telegram from Auckland, that in connection with the reorganisation and extension of the Imperial Trado ' Commissioner servico, Mr. 11. W. Dalton has been reappointed Trado Commissioner in New Zealand.

Mr. W: E. Barry, M.R.C.V.S., Government Veterinary Surgeon in Christchurch, has received a captaincy in tho Now Zeaiand Veterinary Corps, and will leave shortly on active service.

Mr. Frank Thomas, well known in musical circles iu Welling toiij has been appointed organist at St. Andrew s Presbyterian Church, Tho Terrace, and presided at the organ for tiio first tinio on Sunday. Prior to residing m AVellincton three years ago, Mr. lliomas was organist at St. Paul's, Invercargill. Tho funeral of the late Colonel Arthur Hume, formerly Inspector of Prisons, took place yesterday morning, tho interment (private) taking place at tho Karori Cemetery. Tho chief mourners were Colonel J. E. Hume and Mr. Phil Hume, sons of the deceased, whilst tho pall-bearers were Messrs. C. E. Matthews (Inspector ot Prisons), F. D. Thompson (privato secrotary to the Prime Minister), M. F. Luckie, H. Didsbur.v, AY. 11. Rose, and M. C. Barnett.- The bier bore the Cameron plaid, which tho deceased had worn as an officer of the "Queens Own" Cameron Highlanders, a funeral custom for many years associated with the Scottish regiments. The R«v. F. M Kempthorne, of St. Peter's Church, officiated at the graveside. As a tribute of respect to the deceased the Sag at the Terrace Gaol was flown at half-mast, and tho local prisons _ we closed during the period of the interment. Mr. Alexander Hamilton fins been appointed a member of the AYellington Coal Trade Committee, iu place of Mr. AV. A. Flavell, who recently resigned.
