DEATH OF COLONEL A. HUME

The death occurred at his residence, Wellington Terrace, at 11.15 a.m. on Saturday of Colonel Arthur Hume, for many years Inspector of Prisons, and tho father of a family of adult sons who are well known throughout New Zealand. .His death, at 77 years of ago, removes from the community, ono who was among Iho, oldest Civil Servants when he retired some nine years ago. Colonel Hume was a British Army officer, having served with the 79th Queen's Own Cameron Highlanders. On leaving the service, he was employed by the Prison Department of the British Government, and occumed the positions of deputy-governor of Millbank, Dartmoor, and Portland Prisons, and governor of the well known Wormwood Scrubs Prison. When, in 1880, the New Zealand Government advertised for an inspector of prisons, Colonel Hume was selected out of. seen hundred applicat'ons. He took un hk appointment in October, 1880, and_ has been a resident of this city ever since. Ft some years he also acted as Commissioner of Police, and in his dual capacity became well known throughout New Zealand.

The late Colonel Hnme leaves a widow and five sons, viz.:—Colonel .T. E. Hume, of Palmerston North, O.C. Wellington Military District; Mr. Kenneth Hume, of the Union S.S. Co.'s Bvclney Office staff: Mr. Phil Hume, of the staff of the National I)ml Afencv Co., Ltd.. Christchurch; Major Frank Hume, with tho New ZeaFand Expeditionary Fn r c n s; aiid Mr. Hubert Hume, of Sydney. Two other sons am dead: Major Hume, formerly of Wellington, died at Gallipoli, and Mr. Stanley Hume died in Palmerston North ten years ago.
