MILK AND CLEARING HOUSE
(To the Editor.) c ir _\yh v , in tlio name of fortune, vest until lie vacaws die Mj >°'r --nS^^iSn| Sre forced to protect themselves bv forming an association.. *pw, that "ime party are out to deprive, that nssociatfoii of its members, and are S Heaven and earth to e« o be them to gain that end. They have gone so far as to offor all kinds of Sidncements to get tamers to leave th^cS a Su"eil have been invited out to our office at the Lower Butt to inspect our books and Unci out for themselves the business we f™* m *s> and see for their benefit whether we are out to exploit the public of Wellington or to look after the farmers mtererts and eive the o.ty a good supply of milk at α-munerative prices ror the farmers, and get a square deal for those we represent. The pift o that the association has held a pistol at the Mayor's head, saying: "A clearing house or no milk will you get," is all moonshine, and is only mow dust thrown to blind and gull the pubbc, and make (or rather try and make) the Mayor and public believe the tanners ire out to rob them. The Mayor knows that unless the association guts some "drastic alteration" from what we have had in the past, that the greater part of the association's mi k wil cei.se to come to Wellington at all. Only yesterday my directors were waited upon bv inember.s of one association from tho Lower Hutt and surrounding districts to ask us to provide them with a cheese factory, such as we now have working at Paraparaumu, Mangaroa, and Whiteman's Valley \mquestionablv unless something is done almost immediately a far-tory wll be erected there, and if that step.is taken it will be dead against the interests oi the public of Wellington, for it will mean that farmers now milking for the city, will turn their herds into summer herds and milk for the factory only. Tt is to bo sincerely hoped that Jie (ibove step will not have lo he taken, for the nenr-by milk is most essential to the city during the summer months, and winter milk is alicady Ear too short for the city's requirements. Winter milking requires to ho fostared instead of hampered. The quantity ef milk forwiinled to Wellington through our association last month was 70 per cent, of the total milk sent into the city. That being a fact, how could Mr. Tarr and others say they represented fiO per cent. ? I the public of Wellington to stand by Hie "Worship the Mayor, who, I am sure, has their woll-hoing at heart, and deserves tho' greatest; credit for the ' interest and
trouble he is taking on their behalf. ] Without a doubt, the Mayor is out for the good of tho public. Thanking you for your valuable space, I am, etc., T. J. itYDEII, Chairman W.D.I I '. Co-op. Assn. [A part of Mr. liyder's letter has been omitted.] MEEAtJSIAN'TUCK BOXES Sir, —Once more I am asking for a brief space in your paper in which to remind the kindly folk of Wellington that the time for the preparing of tuck I , boxes has come round ngaiii. Your r readers need only reminding, for they s know all about the scheme, aud always s respond most nobly and generously 10 d my appeal. I think that I mention J every year that this good work could not be undertaken were it not for tho 1 splendid help that Wellington friend.; J of the mission always givo to it. My 1 friend and faithful helper, Miss Mess tayer, of Sydney Street, will, I know, 1 kindly receive gifts in cash or in kind, c I hope to begin packing earlyjn March. \ - am, ec, CALDER'. t (Wifo of the Commissary to the s Bishop of Melanssia.) < Auckland, January 29.
