THE FOOD SHORTAGE
Si r) _Your loading article under tho above heading gives one plenty of food for thought. It makes one feel rather sick to read of the straits of the people in England and elsewhere whilst we ar« living in a laud of plenty. Would not a system of rationing of some sort in New Zealand materially assist the Allies in time to come? Many will say that rationing ourselves will not add an ounce of food to English supplies. At the present time, ot course, it wul not, but as tho shortage of food is world-wide, it is necessary to take such steps now to conserve what we can for export when shipping is available. Less bread eaten or wasted at the present time means lessened imports of wheat, from Australia, thus leaving a bigger surplus for export later. Less meat eaten or wasted at the present time means increased quantities in store, or more live stock in the country for kjllincr later on, when ships are availab o to carry it to England. By. a little care aud economy on the part or every householder in New Zealand thousand* of tons of food could be saved by tl.e time peace arrives. Many people n.aae caustic comments on reading in t> e paper recently that some JUastcrtoa families had commenced vo untai> rationiii", but if their lead were followed by the whole of the people o tls country I think it would be good polLj "or and bur Allies m time to come.-I am, etc^^
