PROMOTION ON SERVICE

A REGULATION EXPLAINED. Requests having been made for an interpretation of the General Order relating to the promotion of an officer whilst on active service, Defence Headquarters states: — "Requests have been made for an interpretation of the above paragraph (General Regulations). It is awordiiigly notified, for +he information of all lioncerned,' that the provisions of this paragraph shall cover the period from the time, an oflicer embarks in New Zealand for service overseas to the date he is struck olf the strength of the .Vew Zealand Expeditionary Force. "Tf a case occurs where an officer is recommended for promotion after he has been struck off the strength of the Expeditionary Force and whilst he is unfit to sit for examination by reason of wounds or sickness contracted on active service, such a case should he mado the subject of a special letter to Headquarters, when it will be considered on its merits,"

It is pointed out that it will be useless to retain an officer on the strength of bis unit for promotion if be is permanently unfit, and in such an instance application should be made for the acceptance of his resignation or posting to the Retired List, in accordance with Regulations.
