F.'CHEESE- ■; ■'-" : \ MAN. • It _ was announced at yesterday's meeting of tha New Zealand Institute that the Hector Memorial Prize for 1918 had been awarded to Mr. T. F. Cheeseman, one of the' oldest and most successful of the Dominion's botanists. The members of the Award Committee reported that having carefully considered the claims of all botanists who, in their opinion, might be entitled to receive the Hector Memorial Medal anil Prize, they have unanimously decided to recommend Mr. .T. F. Cheeseman. F.L.S., F.Z.S., as the recipient of the award. This they had done on the grounds not onli of the great excellence of Mr. Chc-eseman's published researches in New Zealand systematic botany, photogcography, and iloral biology, which have been carried on without a break since the early 'seventies of tho last enntury, but also because of tho suorcme' influence of his work, especially of his admirable mniu'al of the New Zealand flora upon botanical investigation throughout the Dominion. Previous holders of the memorial are: 1912. L. Cockayne, Ph.D., F.L.S . F.U.S., for researches in New Zealand br.tnny: 1013.. T. H. Easterfield. M.A., t'i.D. for resenrches in chemistry; 1914, I'lls'loii Bes-t, for researches in New Zealand ethnolocv: 1915, P. Marshall, 31: A.. D.Sc. FAS., for researches in . ;Ncw Zealand wnlogy: 191G, Sir Ernest /Rutherford. F.H.S.. for researches in ,'phvsics: 1917, Charles Chilton, M.A., b.Sc, for researches in zoology.
