MONEY COLLECTORS FINED
A "WAR FUND" AFFAIR. By Telegraph—Press Association. Auckland, January 29. i . At the Police Court to-day William j James Courtuey and William Walter j Dunn, were charged with collecting j money for a war fund, without a permit, and stealing 255. 6d. belonging to the Club. Evidence giveu was to the effect that | defendants went to the club and got a ! returned soldier to write out a heading j for a subscription, list. Courtney I pleaded guilty, but asked for leniency ! as he had already served at.the front, i «nd would return there. Dunn stated j that _he thought that the list was ! genuine. Courtney, who had previous j convictions, was fined £10 for collecting funds, and was sentenced to seven days' imprisonment for the theft. Dunn was fined £2 on the first charge.
