LAND FOR SOLDIERS

PURCHASE IN OTAGO. The Government has purchased for 'settlement by soldiers the well-known Teviot estate in Otago, one of the best of the large holdings remaining in that district. It consists of 12,446 acres of freehold land and 19,020 acres of leasehold. It is on ilia route of the Lawi rence-Roxburgh railway, which was bo'itig laid before tho war, but tho work has been suspended for some time. Most of the land will cut up into sheep farms, but there is a lot of agricultural land in the block. One piece of 400 acres is in oats this season, and it was the opinion of experts that this crop would average 75 bushels to tho ■acre. There is also an area of 1000 acres of tho land in turnips. Ic is said that some of the flats are suitable for fruit-growing, and the land is within a few miles of the fruit-growing centre of Roxburgh.
