LOWER HUTT BOROUGH

MEETING OF THE COUNCIL. The Mayor (Mr. H. Baldwin) presided at the ordinary meeting of the Lower Hutt Borough Council held last evening. There were present also Councillors "W. G. Meldrum, W. Walton, -W. Cotton, AV. Kerr, J. MDougall, J. Bra sell, H. A. Ward, and A. Hobbs. . Mr. 6. F. Anyon wrote complaining that the footpath and water channel in front of his residence were always left untouched, though another part of the road received attention. Councillor M'Dougall stated that residents on the other part of the road cleaned the footpath and channel themselves. The borough engineer stated that borough workmen had started on the worit but had been called away to other work in the borough. It would be attended to as soon as possible. The council decided to inform Mr. Anyon that the work would receive attention as soon as possible. The Petone Borough Council wrote asking if the Lower Hutt Borough Council would pay half the cost of bathing sheds and conveniences at the eastern end of the Esplanade. It was resolved to inform the Petone Council that the Lower Hutt borough was not prepared to spend' any - more money just now on bathing sheds." A letter was received from the secretary of the Hutt Technical School Building Fund Committee stating that tho Department of Education was prepared to consider an application for a pound for pound subsidy up to £250 in respect of land donated by Mr. ,Riddiford, and a further pound for pound subsidy up to £300 on monetary contributions in aid of buildings and equipment, and asking the council for a substantial donation towards the fund. It was decided to inform tho secretary that the council would'when framing the estimates for 1918-19 make provision for a contribution.
